The research strength of the Centre lies in the integrated study of the social, political and economic development of modern China and Japan. A major aspect of that work is its reliance on original source materials from the countries concerned. Eight main areas of research stand out:

  • The politics and economy of modern China, Japan and Korea.
  • Chinese and Japanese history.
  • Social and cultural development in China, Japan and Korea.
  • Chinese thought.
  • Chinese gender studies
  • Applied and theoretical linguistics in Chinese and Japanese.
  • Education and youth-related issues Agricultural and environmental issues in Asia.
  • Education history and development in China

Research in these areas is conducted individually and collectively by Centre staff and post-graduate students. Particular research projects in these areas are funded by bodies such as the Australian Research Council, or the University Research Grants Scheme.
