January to March 2008

The Creative Writing Program hosted an Adelaide Writers’ Week Seminar, ‘Places for Writing’, with visiting writers Linda Grant (UK) and Bill Manhire (NZ).

Novelist Marion Halligan held a FICTION MASTERCLASS for a small group of Creative Writing Students.

Biographer Hazel Rowley held a NON-FICTION MASTERCLASS for a small group of Creative Writing Students.

PhD graduate Ray Tyndale's verse novel, Farmwoman. was published in Feburary by Wakefield Press. Farmwoman was launched by Professor Nicholas Jose in the Barr Smith Library Reading Room.

M.A. Graduate and PhD candidate Carole LeFevre’s novel, Nights in the Asylum, was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Regional Shortlist, South East Asia and South Pacific, Best First Book Award).

ISSUE 4 of Etchings (themed ‘The Art of Conversation’) was launched at the SA Writers’ Centre in March. Etchings is a literary magazine published by independent publisher, Ilura Press, which was founded by PhD in Creative Writing graduates Sabina Hopfer and Christopher Lappas. Etchings 4 was launched by novelist and MA Graduate Carol Lefevre, author of Nights in the Asylum (Random House). The launch included readings by Creative Writing graduates Rebekah Clarkson, Heather Taylor Johnson & Henry Ashley-Brown.

The Creative Writing Program was delighted to confirm Dr Eva Sallis as our inaugural Writer in Residence, beginning February 2008.

PhD graduate Heather Taylor Johnson launched her poetry book, Exit Wounds, published by Picaro Press.

Two of our current PhD students, Gillian Britton and Stephen Lawrence, are editing a Wakefield Press anthology on Adelaide, Small City Tales of Strangeness and Beauty (Wakefield Press).
