Why Study English?

Students of English learn, think, and write critically about the ways that many forms of cultural production—manuscripts and printed books; films, television, and digital media; magazines and sport—both reflect and shape our world. English Studies thus provide the basis for a dynamic and vibrant engagement with the community. Communication is the heart of our discipline, and it's the most sought-after skill in the world today. Thus, as students in our department are learning about past and present imaginative and creative works, they are preparing for the future by honing their communicative and interpretative skills. English graduates have great versatility in shaping their careers; degrees in English are particularly well suited for the creative industries and new media, journalism, public policy, advertising, business, publishing, and teaching.
