Why Study European Studies?
Without Europe there would be no drama as we know it, no novels as we know them, no philosophy as we know it, no Christianity as we know it, no modern science and its dependent technologies, no liberal democracy (or communism or fascism for that matter), no classical music as we know it, no electric guitars, no United States, no global economic system, no university (so you wouldn't be here), no etc. etc. Get the point? The beliefs, ideas and social, political, and economic structures which shape Western civilisation, and hence the modern world have their origins in Europe.
A major in European Studies is designed to give students an interdisciplinary understanding of the origins and development of the history, religion, literature, philosophy, culture, languages and social, political, and economic systems which have made Western civilisation what it is. In addition to enabling students to have a rich background in our European origins and development, a major in European Studies provides students with the opportunity to study contemporary European culture and society and its continuing impact upon today's world.
In addition to being able to study areas as diverse as music, film, philosophy, politics, religion, and literature, students considering majoring in European Studies are encouraged to learn a European language to broaden their cultural and intellectual horizons. We also encourage students to spend time learning a language and studying in Europe. European Studies is also relevant to anyone wishing to major in The History of Ideas.
Because of its interdisciplinary European Studies provides an excellent area of study for anyone majoring in Philosophy, English, History, or Politics.
