Discovery and Empire: The French in the South Seas
A Symposium to be held at the State Library of South Australia, 8 July 2009
The aim of this symposium is to examine the role that scientific voyages to the south seas played in the French imagination and, more particularly, in that nation's quest to expand its empire and influence. Papers will cover the extended period commonly referred to as the Age of Discovery.
The Discovery and Empire symposium is one of the strands of the XVIIth Biennial Conference of the Australasian Association of European Historians, 6-9 July 2009, whose theme is "Europe's Expansions and Contractions". For further information on the AAEH conference, see the conference website.
