French Studies Prizes
A number of prizes are awarded to students of French at different levels. They are:
The Hope Crampton Prize French I (for the student who has been placed first in the list of candidates in French I).
The Christine Horton Prize French IA (for the student who has shown the highest academic merit in French IA).
The Edith A. Puddy Prize French II (for the student placed first amongst the candidates in French II).
The M. Rees George Memorial Prize French IIA (for the student who has been placed first in the list of candidates in French IIA).
The Violet de Mole Prize French III (for the student placed first in the annual examination in French III).
The M. Rees George Memorial Prize& the Swiss Consul Prize French IIIA (for the student placed first in the annual examination in French IIIA).
The J.G. Cornell Prize French Honours (for the student placed highest in the final examination for the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Arts in French Language and Culture).
SCHOLARSHIPS
1. Assistantships Each year, the French Embassy in Canberra offers a number of Assistantships aimed primarily at students who intend pursuing a career as a teacher of French in Australia. This involves spending nine months in France as an English tutor in a secondary school (September-June). Applications are normally called for towards the end of the academic year (October/November) and must be submitted to the French Discipline Convenor.
2. Baudin Travel Grants The French Government, through its Embassy in Canberra, also offers a number of travel grants to assist students who wish to spend a semester or two in France, pursuing their studies in their particular field of specialisation. Applications are due in May.
3. Postgraduate Study in France The French Embassy offers two awards to Australian students who wish to spend 11 months in France as part of their postgraduate study programme. Applications are normally called for towards the end of the academic year (October/November) and must be submitted to the French Discipline Convenor.
4. Rice Scholarships Postgraduate students may also apply for a Rice Scholarship which is offered by the University, through the Centre for European Studies, to support one year of study abroad by a postgraduate student in a language-based discipline. A small number of travel awards are also available under this scheme.
