Why Should I Study a Language?

The benefits to be gained from adding a language skill to your chosen field of study are substantial. Not only do language students have a more rounded educational experience, some of the practical and cultural benefits are:

  • enhanced employment prospects
  • the possibility of studying in your chosen field overseas
  • the possibility of competing for overseas study scholarships
  • access to resources and materials published in a foreign language
  • the possibility of interacting with students in other countries studying in the same area
  • greater understanding of people of other cultures through insights into their ways of thinking and cultural and linguistic practices.

How Can I Study a Language?

There are three ways in which you can undertake language study:

  • Bachelor of Languages

The Bachelor of Languages is a full three year degree in which you can undertake an extended major in one language, and a minor (or double major) in second language or the study of linguistics.

Find out more about the Bachelor of Languages.

  • Diploma in Languages

You have the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification in your chosen language adding only one extra year of study to your primary degree. The Diploma is available only to all domestic students who are completing an undergraduate degree or postgraduate studies at the University of Adelaide

See our Diploma FAQs to find out more about the Diploma in Languages

  • Major, Minor or Electives

You can choose to complete a major or minor sequence in a language, or study language courses as electives (free choice courses). The number of language courses you will be able to study in this mode may be dependant on the structure of your degree.

If you need advice about how language study can fit into your degree, contact the Faculty Office.
