In recognition of his substantial and ongoing contribution to the field of
legal history and the work of the Australian and New Zealand Legal History Society
(ANZLHS), the ANZLHS has established 5 Bruce Kercher Conference Scholarships for
2008 which it plans to award as follows:
- 3 for students from an Australian university
- 2 for students from a New Zealand university
Each scholarship winner in 2008 will be provided with:
- A contribution towards or reimbursement of a return economy airfare to the
annual ANZLHS conference to be held in Adelaide 11-13 December 2008 to a maximum
of A$300 for Australian students and $A500 for NZ students
- Conference registration fees
- 1 years' membership of the ANZLHS
- The opportunity to give a short presentation based on their submitted work
to the ANZLHS conference in Adelaide

Scholarship winners are responsible for any balance of their arifares, their
accommodation costs in Adelaide and all incidental costs at the conference, and
individual universities are requested to provide a stipend to assist the students
to meet the costs in this regard. Scholarships are open to any current postgraduate
student and any current undergraduate student at third year level or above at
an Australian or New Zealand university, preferable studying a degree in law or
history. Applicants must submit a piece of written work of 3,000 words or more,
written in 2008 on a topic of interest to legal historians. The work can be an
essay, seminar paper or research paper submitted as part of their course work,
provided any such essay must have been awarded a Distinction/'A' grade or above.
It will be acceptable for the applicant to submit a copy of the essay as marked
with or without the markers comments and any corrections.
Each applicant is to submit a letter of application that includes:
- short statement of his/her interest in legal history, and his/her future career
or academic intentions
- a curriculum vitae
- a short note or letter of recommendation by a member of academic staff familiar
with the student and his/her work

The Applications will be assessed by a Committee of three, comprising Andrew
Buck, as President of ANZLHS, Tim Castle, a Sydney lawyer and member of the ANZLHS
executive, and one member of the Adelaide conference organizing committee (Professor
Wilf Prest, Professor John Williams, Professor David Lemmings). The Committee's
decision will be final, and the Committee reserves the right not to award any
of the scholarships. In reaching its decision, the Committee may consult with
other members of the ANZLHS Committee as its sees fit, and will also endeavour
to ensure that the scholarships are awarded across a range of universities where
possible.
