Graduate Profiles
Following are profiles of a selection of our PhD graduates.
Howes, Dr
Michael (completed PhD in 2000)
Dr Howes is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Environment,
Griffith University. Michael’s thesis “Putting the Pieces Together: Sustainable Industry, Environment,
Protection, and the Power of Federal Government in the USA and Australia”,
dealt with cutting-edge issues of environmental regulation. Michael has since
published numerous journal articles. His book, Politics
and the Environment: Risk and the Role of Government and Industry was published
by Earthscan in 2005.
Lee, Dr Terence (completed PhD in 2004)
Dr Lee is an Associate Professor
in Mass Communication and a Research Fellow of the Asia Research Centre at Murdoch
University. While a Ph.D candidate, Terence won the 1999 Cultural and Media
Policy Essay Prize and the 2000 CAMLA prize
in Communications Law. Terence’s path-breaking doctoral research on “Politics,
Governmentality & Cultural Regulation in Singapore” has resulted in
numerous publications. The latest, a book co-edited with Sen Krishna, Political
Regimes and the Media in East Asia: Continuities, Contradictions and Change
is being published by Routledge in October 2007.
Mahoney, Dr Brigid
(completed PhD in 2002)
Dr Mahoney is Ministerial Adviser, Office of Hon. Gail Gago MLC, the Minister
for Mental Health & Substance Abuse, Minister for Environment & Conservation
and Minister Assisting the Minister for Health. Brigid’s thesis, “Jurgen
Habermas and the Public Sphere: Critical Engagements” applied theoretical
concerns to policy issues ranging from gender to new information technology.
Pavils, Dr Janice (completed
PhD 2005)
Dr Pavils is now an independent scholar actively pursuing historical research. She has maintained a strong interest in the subject of her thesis, the history of Anzac Day and the emergence of Anzac culture. Dr Pavils's highly original thesis has been published with assistance from the History Trust of South Australia. The book, Anzac Day: The Undying Debt has been praised highly by the emininent Australian historian, Bill Gammage. He says "if you want to understand Australia, read this book!" Dr Pavils is working on a second book which will place her local research in more broadly national context.
Thorpe, Dr Julie
(completed PhD 2007)
Dr Thorpe's area of expertise is Modern Central European history.
Soon after completing her thesis she won a teaching and research fellowship
at the Australian National University's National Europe Centre. As
a student Dr Thorpe presented papers at international conferences in the UK and
attended a prestigious summer school in Germany. Julie has
begun publishing her workinternationally and plans to attend two international
conferences (in Sofia and Leicester) in 2007. She will be offering
a new course in History here at the University of Adelaide in 2008.
Zhang, Dr Ning (completed PhD 2005)
Dr Zhang is a lecturer in Chinese in the Centre for Asian Studies at the University
of Adelaide. She worked on her thesis part-time through the
History Discipline and was awarded her doctorate in 2005. Ning has continued
to research in her area of expertise - Chinese vocational and technical education
- and has published articles in China on this topic. She is
working towards publishing her thesis as a book. Currently Dr Zhang is Interim
Deputy Director of the University's innovative Confucius Institute.
