Further Study

Graduates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences are encouraged to further their studies by undertaking an honours year (one year of full-time study). The Honours degree is a fourth year of specialised study and involves a higher standard of academic performance than courses for the ordinary degree. It includes advanced coursework and a research component where you will produce an extended piece of work (thesis) on a chosen topic, inconsultation with an academic supervisor. The Honours year is considered to be a year of full-time study and regular attendance at classes is required. It is possible to do Honours over two years on account of special personal or medical circumstances.

Application for this is to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences office by 31 March each year. The prerequisite for Honours study is at least credit standard in a specified major. Applications are called for by Disciplines / Schools in October and November each year. Applications should be to School offices. There is no need to apply through SATAC for the Honours year. Further details on Honours is available from Schools and Disciplines in the Faculty.

Honours is the normal prerequisite for entry to a higher degree by research at the masters and doctor of philosophy level, and is also preferred by many employers.
