Languages

Whether you are a fluent speaker or have never studied a language before, the University of Adelaide offers you an opportunity to study a language within your degree, or within a Diploma in Languages. You can even study your chosen language abroad!

The following languages are available to study through the University of Adelaide in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. To enrol in these courses, follow the normal steps for enrolment on Access Adelaide. For more detailed information on language courses to enrol in, please contact the relevant language school:

Adelaide/Flinders Language Outreach Program

Flinders University teaches several courses (known as topics at Flinders University) in the following languages:

  • Italian
  • Spanish (IISA adn Level III)
  • Modern Greek
  • Indonesian

These languages are taught at both Flinders University and the University of Adelaide campuses, and further courses are available in these languages at Flinders University only. Flinders University staff teach on the University of Adelaide North Terrace Campus, but enrolment is processed through Flinders University. How do I enrol as a cross-institutional language student at Flinders University?

To enrol as a cross-institutional student, follow these steps:

  1. Plan your language courses. The University of Adelaide Course Planner can give you information about the language courses offered by Flinders (on the University of Adelaide campus).  You are not able to enrol for these courses through Access Adelaide, but can choose the class times you would like to attend from the Course Planner (please make note of the relevant Class Numbers for your preferred times)

    If you prefer to study on the Flinders University campus, you can get help in selecting your courses by searching the Flinders topic information at http://stusyswww.flinders.edu.au/topic.taf and click 'show timetable' for each topic to check the timetable details (make sure you confirm the locations for each topic). 
     
  2. Get Approval from the University of Adelaide. Email Vicki Johnson at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences office with your student ID and the language/s you wish to gain approval for. Your Approval form will be emailed back to you. You will need to print the Approval form and send it to Flinders as proof that the University of Adelaide has approved your enrolment as a cross-institutional student.
  3. Obtain a Flinders cross-institutional enrolment information package from Flinders University Enrolment Services (call 1300 360 351), which will contain:
    1.  
      • Flinders University Cross-Institutional Enrolment form
      • Request for Commonwealth Assistance form (CAF)
      • Details of what information must be provided in order to enrol
      • Reply paid envelope to send your enrolment form to Flinders
      • Reply paid envelope to provide proof of payment of full-time Student Services Fees in order to request exemption (where applicable)
  4. Complete the required forms and attach a copy of your cross institutional approval form from the University of Adelaide.
  5. Post the forms using the reply paid envelope to:

You will be enrolled in the required topics by Flinders University staff, who will send a Confirmation of Enrolment notice in the mail once enrolled. If not received, please contact Enrolment Services on 1300 360 351.

You will also receive an account for the Student Services Fee at Flinders and any tuition fees or student contribution amounts that apply. Students who are enrolled full-time at their home university and who provide proof of payment for the full-time Student Services Fee will be exempted from payment of the Flinders Student Services Fee - send proof of payment in the reply paid envelope provided.

After the census date, Commonwealth supported students will receive a Commonwealth Assistance Notice for studies undertaken with Flinders University.

You must make sure you are enrolled and have submitted a CAF by the census date (Commonwealth supported students only). The University cannot accept an enrolment after the census date.

Information for Flinders University students enrolling into University of Adelaide languages

The University of Adelaide teaches Chinese, Japanese and German at the North Terrace Campus.  To enrol in these language courses, you will need to collect a University of Adelaide cross-institutional enrolment package. These are available from Flinders University Enrolment Services call 1300 360 351 or by visiting the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Office

This enrolment pack will contain:

  •  
    • A Cross-Institutional Enrolment Form
    • A Request for Commonwealth Assistance Form (CAF)
    • Details of what information must be provided in order to enrol
    • A reply paid envelope to send the enrolment form

The Enrolment Form provides evidence of approval for cross-institutional study, whether you are a Commonwealth supported or fee-paying student, and, if Commonwealth supported, whether you are eligible to be a pre-2005 student.

Complete the required form(s) and post them, using the reply paid envelope to:

You will be enrolled in the required subjects by University of Adelaide staff, who will send details of your Adelaide username and password to access information about your classes at the University of Adelaide.
