Media Advisory Board Member BiographiesKim Boehm is Managing Director of Clemenger BBDO Adelaide and a board member of BBDO Australasia. Former roles have included Managing Director of Melbourne agencies Clemenger Harvie Edge and Young & Rubicam. He is also a Board member of CARE Australia and the Adelaide Festival Centre Foundation. John Chataway is CEO of the Kojo Group, South Australia's largest visual communication specialist company. An accomplished director and award-winning cinematographer in his own right, John is also a Board Member of the SAFC, a founding member of the United Film Group, a member of the SA Screen Council and on the board of the Australian Dance Theatre. In 2002 John was a State Winner and National Finalist in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, and continues to be a judge in the annual awards. Georgina Deally (Board Secretary) Georgina Deally graduated from the University of South Australia with a Graduate Diploma in Business (Administrative Management) and a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Previous roles have included sales administration for a number of consumer goods companies in South Australia, government departments in Western Australia and British Telecom in Colchester, England. She joined the University of Adelaide in April 2006 working in an administrative position within the School of Humanities providing support to the Discipline of Media as well as other Disciplines. Mary Griffiths (Head of Media) Associate Professor Mary Griffiths joined the University of Adelaide in July 2006, from senior positions in Screen and Media, University of Waikato, NZ, and in Communications and Writing, Monash University. She was a foundation member, then head, of the group charged with launching Monash's international, flexible delivery media, communications and writing programs, first in Singapore and Malaysia, then globally. As the first Visiting Research Associate at Monash's Institute for Regional Studies in 2003, she convened the Institute’s 2nd International conference, on E-governance. Her teaching experience includes: the social and political impact of digital and mobile technologies, media research methodology including creative approaches, professional practice, media ethics, globalisation and the local, realist cinema and film noir, writing techniques, and postcolonial cultural production. An enthusiastic collector of (even ephemeral) information about new technologies and media practices, she is leading the development of ‘participatory media’ programs at the University of Adelaide. Media democracy and digital citizenship, regulation of new media, e-participation, digital literacy, media theory and research methods, digital storytelling, and mobile interactive technologies are current research interests. Mary is a member of the editorial boards of the international refereed journals Communication, Politics and Culture, EJEG: the Electronic Journal of E-Government, The Journal of E-Government, and Ethical Space: the Journal of Communication Ethics, she runs the mini-track in e-democracy and e-participation at the annual European Conference of E-Government (ECEG) and at the international conference (ICEG), and regularly reviews for information-science journals and conferences. She has worked as a member of local government strategic communications and planning committees. She is a member of international research partnerships in the areas of e-governance, and regulation. Professor Nick Harvey Professor Nick Harvey is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Adelaide. Nick is one of the 5 Australian lead authors on the Australia and New Zealand Chapter of the IPCC, Working Group II report on climate change impacts and vulnerability and he is the only IPCC lead author from South Australia. Last year the IPCC won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Al Gore. Matthew Leske is a Product Manager working for Google in Sydney after recently spending four years with Google in London. During this period in London he negotiated advertising partnerships with leading media companies across Europe, before leading the product development for new advertising platforms and analysis of user interaction with advertising. Matthew started his career with an Honours Degree in Engineering from the University of Adelaide in 1997, and has since worked for government organisations, technology contracting companies, and an internet start-up. He has also completed a Graduate Certificate in Management from the Australian National University and has been awarded numerous academic and industry prizes. Matthew currently leads the product strategy and development for advertising on Google Maps. Marc is the Managing Director of Marc Makrid & Associates, an independent consulting practice with a wide range of clients, specialising in strategic marketing planning and implementation. Marc’s background encompasses a marketing/business degree, early career roles in buying and retail, human resource management and has included senior marketing and management roles at Cadbury Schweppes, SA Brewing and DairyVale Foods Ltd. He is actively involved with a number of organisations as a Board member. Melvin Mansell began his journalistic career in New Zealand before joining News Limited as a reporter in 1980. From 1984 he worked on newspapers in Hong Kong and London before returning to The Daily Telegraph in 1989. He held a range of key editorial positions in sport and news before being appointed news editor. He later became day editor and then assistant editor. In December 1998 he was appointed assistant editor of The Advertiser and in March 1999, became editor of The Advertiser. John McLaren is a Board Director of Clemenger BBDO Adelaide and has been in the Advertising Industry for more than 25 years. John is the Chairman of the South Australian branch of The Advertising Federation of Australia and sits on the National Board. He also represents the AFA nationally as a Board Director for The Advertising Standards Bureau. Michael Neale is Head of Marketing at the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company San Remo and is a South Australian Council Member of the Australian Marketing Institute. He has a distinguished career working with companies in many different industries, as diverse as housewares through to high technology electronics, in both Australia and the UK. He has worked in an internet search technology company as well as having been Director of Marketing & Strategic Communications for the University of Adelaide. He is currently the Chair of the Media Advisory Board. Associate Professor Gerard O'Brien completed an honours degree in Philosophy at the University of New South Wales and a doctorate at the University of Oxford before taking up a lectureship in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Adelaide in 1989. Since 2004 he has been Head of the School of Humanities at the University of Adelaide, which includes the Discipline of Media. Paul Preiss is currently Director of Marketing and Communications at the University of Adelaide. He came to the University after 8 years as General Manager Sales & Marketing for the Royal Automobile Association of SA. He is an experienced senior executive having a successful career covering a broad range of industries including retail, member organisations, travel, automotive and financial services. Paul has also worked in manufacturing and international trade and has served on several boards, industry committees and national project teams. He is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, an Associate Fellow and CPMgr of the Australian Institute of Management, and Fellow and CPM of the Australian Institute of Marketing. Anne Rodgers is General Manager of media agency Starcom in Adelaide, part of the $800M Starcom MediaVest Group in Australia. Starcom is now the leading media agency in South Australia employing over 50 staff and servicing the media requirements of the South Australian Government and many of South Australia's major commercial advertising accounts. Anne began her media career 20 years ago with Young & Rubicam and worked as a planner, buyer and media strategist before being appointed as a Media Manager on major national clients including Mitsubishi Motors, Orlando Wyndham, Pizza Haven and Safcol. Anne shares her knowledge and experience with the industry in her role as lecturer for the Australian Federation of Advertising's Media Planning course. This course grooms and encourages those entering the advertising industry to use their skills and learn to build on their existing competency levels. Nikki Seymour-Smith Mike Smithson has been a journalist for more than 30 years and a specialist political reporter and analyst for well over a decade. He started as a newspaper cadet at Messenger Newspapers before launching into a television journalism career with Channel 7 Adelaide. He’s also been employed as senior police reporter with Channel 7 Melbourne, was Bureau Chief for a national current affairs program and was the Seven Network’s European correspondent for two years. In between, Mike has been a regular news presenter for more than 20 years as well as a morning talkback radio host. His achievements include being awarded 2007 SA Journalist of the Year for his television reporting and newspaper opinion pieces and a 2009 SA Media Award, also for his weekly Sunday Mail column. He was also nominated for a national television Logie Award by the Seven Network for his coverage of the Skase chase in Spain. Mike has been a lecturer in television journalism at the University of SA. Mark is Group Creative Director, DMG Radio Australia, an Adelaide-based national radio company encompassing the Nova network and FIVEaa. A former student of Film Studies at Uni SA and also in London, he has worked in radio for 12 years as a writer, and has won a number of awards for writing. His expertise extends into advertising, with a number of major brands benefiting from his skills. Horden is a pioneer of the Australian Mobile Internet Industry. He joined m.Net Corporation in 2001 as Project Director and was responsible for a number of the company's early infrastructure and mobile application initiatives, including rolling out the first 3G Network in the southern hemisphere (a test bed for mobile application development), the first Australian developer program for 3G applications and Australia’s first public WLAN network. Appointed as CEO in early 2003, he has been responsible for transforming m.Net into Australia's leading full-service mobile marketing company. In 2008 the Business Review Weekly ranked m.Net as the fastest growing company in South Australia over the previous four year period. Horden's leadership skills were sharpened during an earlier carrier in the Royal Australian Navy from where he retired as a submarine Commanding Officer. Appointed to her current position in May 2003, Sandra reports to the ABC’s Director of Strategy and Communications and is responsible for the strategic management of the corporation’s activities in South Australia and for building links with key stakeholders and the community. She is a member of the South Australian Multicultural Forum; the University of South Australia School of Communication, Information and New Media Advisory Committee; the Australian Open Garden Scheme in South Australia; the Unifem Breakfast Committee; South Australian Press Club Committee, Board member on the Guadagnini Violin Trust, member of the University of Adelaide Media Advisory Board, Trustee of CEDA [Committee for Economic Development of Australia] and judge of the South Australian categories of the Australian of the Year for the Australia Day Council. |
