When applying for university I was unsure of what degree would best suit my areas of interest. In an attempt to get a broader understanding of issues affecting the world, and to improve my critical thinking skills, I chose the Arts degree. The freedom of the Arts degree allows students to choose an array of topics from various fields of inquiry, all of which foster an enriched learning environment.
One of the courses I enjoyed most in my degree was the Arts Internship. The internship course allowed the research skills learnt throughout my University career to be utilised, refined and applied to the workforce. I undertook my internship at the South Australian Council of Social Service (SACOSS) - a non-government, not-for-profit organisation and the peak body for community services in South Australia.
One of the most satisfying aspects of the internship was being able to participate in some of the daily workplace tasks, such as staff meetings and conferences. Such duties allowed me to gain an enhanced perspective of the workforce and provided me with insight as to how organisations go about their daily business. Apart from the challenging and fulfilling nature of the Arts internship, it also provided me with the opportunity to kick-start my career, as I was offered a part time position with SACOSS.
Both the Arts degree and the internship course have prepared me for the Honours year in which I am about to undertake, and I look forward to seeing where the degree and my position at SACOSS take me in my future career aspirations
