The David Murray Scholarships

Whereas the late David Murray has bequeathed the sum of £2000 to the University of Adelaide for the purpose of founding scholarships and whereas the said sum has been paid to the University to be used and administered by it in fulfilment of such intention, and that sum having been
increased in 1972 to $8,300 by capitalisation of unspent income, it is hereby provided as follows:

  1. The scholarships shall be called “The David Murray Scholarships”.
  2. The purpose of the scholarships shall be to encourage advanced work and original investigation.
  3. The sum of $500 may be awarded in each year by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, by the School of Law, by the Faculty of Science, by the Faculty of Mathematical and Computer Sciences and by the Faculty of Medicine.
  4. The scholarships shall be awarded in accordance with conditions prepared by and approved within each faculty. Within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences the following rules apply:

The David Murray Scholarship (Arts)

Annual income in this prize account has increased over time such that in 2001 it is now able to support expenditure on prizes of $500 per year. The scholarship has been available only to students in departments where comparably valuable awards were not available at this level. To this end, in order to assist students who intend to undertake postgraduate study in the Faculty, the scholarship will be awarded on the result of the examination for Honours Anthropology, Honours Asian Studies, Honours Environmental Studies, Honours Linguistics or Honours Labour Studies.

  1. The name of the prize shall be the “The David Murray Scholarship”.
  2. The annual value of the prize shall $500, unless otherwise determined.
  3. The prize shall be awarded each year to the student who has achieved the most outstanding final result for the Honours year in the courses specified above.
  4. If the examiners deem that two or more candidates are of equal merit, the prize shall be divided equally amongst those candidates.
  5. If, in any particular year, the examiners consider that no candidate is suitable for the prize, then no award shall be made.
