The Vera May Swift Scholarship

Whereas the late Vera May Swift having bequeathed part of her estate to the University to be made available for the establishment of a trust fund from the annual income of which there shall be provided the following scholarships:

  1. There shall be four scholarships, each known as the "Vera May Swift Scholarship", awarded annually.
  2. The value of each scholarship shall be $500, unless otherwise determined by the Faculty.
  3. The scholarships shall be awarded to the two students who attain the highest first class Honours in English and the two students who attain the highest first class Honours in Creative Writing result in that year, who elect to take postgraduate studies in English or Creative Writing and who are not in receipt of the John Howard Clark Prize.
  4. If, in any particular year, there are not two suitable candidates from Honours in Creative Writing, the remaining scholarship/s shall be awarded to the student/s who attain the highest first class Honours English result in that year, who elect to take postgraduate studies in the Department of English and who are not in receipt of the John Howard Clark Prize.
  5. If in any particular year, the examiners consider that no candidate is suitable for the prize, then no award shall be made.
  6. These rules may be varied from time to time by the Faculty but the title and purpose shall not be changed.
