ANTS Art

The ANTS logo was created using artwork from artist Inawinytji Williamson.  Her artwork 'Bush Foods' was purchased from Better World Arts by Heritage and Collections at the University of Adelaide.  ANTS has purchased a license to use the art as a visual flag.

Inawinytji Williamson

Inawinytji Williamson is from Kaltjiti (Fregon) in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara Lands.  Inawinytji's themes relate to traditional images derived from the environment and Aboriginal culture.  Prior to painting, Imawinytji worked in the medium of batik, wome of which are held in The National Gallery of Victoria and Murdoch University in Western Australia.  Inawinytji is a very active community member and lectures at CASM at Adelaide University .  She now lives in Adelaide and is on the executive committee for the Nguru Wiru Winkiku Indigenous Corporation.

Bush Foods

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Size: 102 x 51 cm

Date Created: 22/10/2010

Inawinytji's country is abundant with bush foods and the women go from place to place collecting.  The foods include Tjala (honey ants), maku (witchetty grubs), kampurarpa (bush tomatoes) and wayanu (quandong).  Women perform specual ceremonies of inma to celebrate bush food.  We do Maku Inma an Mimili, high up on the rocks and throw the yellow from the maku out from the rocks and it spreads from tree to tree and makes lots of maku all over our land.  Tha Kampurarpa Inma is secret from women and after we do inma in the bush we take damper and tea to the men and children.

These are foods that Inawinytji and her family collect when they are out bush.  They are nutrient rich and have sustained her people for generations.  As a senior woman, Inawinytji is custodain of stories and culture of the Anangu Pitjantiatjara Yankunytjatjara people handed down through the generations.
