Postgraduate Studies in Geography, Environment & Population

Postgraduate coursework programs
The Charles and Frank Fenner Postgraduate Research Grants
Postgraduate fields of research

Geography, Environment and Population has the largest research postgraduate cohort of students in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, and one of the largest in any discipline in the University.  Candidates come from local and interstate areas as well as from nearly all corners of the globe.  Current issues from climate change to global migration and urban development are pressing debates across the planet.

Geography, Environment and Population is able to offer individual computer facilities in recently refurbished student offices.  Our students are a convivial group who enjoy the intellectual challenge of research and debate.

Postgraduate Handbook

The Postgraduate Handbook is available online.

The Handbook provides all the information and links to process and procedure for postgraduate study.  Please take the time to peruse the Handbook so that you are aware of the essential paperwork required as well as the contacts you will need to establish as postgraduates proceed through their years of research study.

For postgraduate studies by research queries, please contact Dr Di Rudd or the Geography, Environment and Population Office .

Postgraduate Research Grant

The Charles and Frank Fenner Postgraduate Research Grants

For currently enrolled Master's by Research or Doctor of Philosophy students in the Discipline of Geography, Environment and Population at the University of Adelaide.

The Charles and Frank Fenner Postgraduate Research Grants application form (download here)

Application forms must be returned to the Discipline of Geography, Environment and Poulation, Napier 723, by 30 June 2010.

Emeritus Professor Frank Fenner CMG MBE AC, is credited with overseeing the eradication of smallpox and controlling Australia's rabbit plague through the introduction of myxomatosis. Frank graduated in medicine at the University of Adelaide in 1938.  Professor Fenner's father, Charles, was South Australian Director of Education from 1939 to 1946 and integral in establishing geography studies at the University.

Frank established the Charles and Frank Fenner Postgraduate Research Grants in late 2009, to be awarded from 2010 onwards. He provided the Fund during his lifetime and then ensured it became perpetual through a bequest left for the continuation of these grants.

The Grants will provide financial assistance to Masters by Research or Doctor of Philosophy students enrolled in the Discipline of Geography, Environment and Population with a preference for primary field-based research.

The Grants may be used for any research costs such as:

• travel costs
• purchase of equipment
• purchase of data
• data collection
