Exchange program selection is based on academic merit, references and an interview. You will be required to make your own travel and accommodation arrangements. Exchange students are not liable for overseas tuition fees, but incur the normal HECS liability for the workload undertaken overseas.

Withdrawing enrolment
If you wish to withdraw your enrolment in a course you need to do so through Access Adelaide.
Note: you need to be aware of the critical dates involved in withdrawing as post census date you will still be liable for payment of course fees, and the courses you enrolled in will be recorded on your academic transcript which may have consequences for your Grade Point Average (GPA).
Retrospective Withdrawal Without Failure
If you are unable to complete the requirements of a course due to extenuating circumstance, e.g. medical, personal, or employment related reasons, you may be eligible for a retrospective withdrawal without failure (WNF). To apply, you will need to submit an application in writing including:
- a signed letter explaining your circumstances and listing the courses you wish to withdraw from,
- an original or certified copy of supporting documentation, e.g. a letter from a medical practitioner, counsellor, or Education and Welfare Officer, and
- a contact email address (this should be your student email account if you are currently enrolled)
Your application must be received within 12 months of the date of withdrawal from the course, or 12 months from the last day of semester if you did not withdraw. Applications should be submitted to:
Ms Charlotte Jackson
Manager Student Administrative Services
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
University of Adelaide SA 5005
Please note, a retrospective withdrawal is granted only in exceptional circumstances. The University deems that special circumstances apply where the circumstances:
- were beyond your control and were not due to your action or inaction, and
- did not occur, or did not make their full impact on you known, until after the census date for the course(s), and
- made it impracticable for you to meet the attendance and/or assessment requirements of the course(s).
It is not sufficient to plead ignorance of the appropriate withdrawal dates and procedures as these are well publicised and all students are responsible for making themselves aware of the requirements of their enrolment.
Once received, your application will be processed within 4 weeks and you will be notified of the outcome via email.
Refunds, Remissions, and Re-credits
In addition to applying to vary your enrolment record, you may also wish to seek:
- remission of your student learning entitlement (SLE) and removal of the associated HECS-HELP debt,
- remission of FEE-HELP debt,
- refund of any related upfront fee payments
Please note that this is a separate process to a retrospective withdrawal without failure .
For more information about a special circumstances withdrawal and to download an application form, please visit the Student Finance website.
Academic Progress Reviews

Depending on which program you are enrolled in, come and talk to a member of staff if you receive a letter. They will be able to provide sound suggestions to assist you in improving your performance.
