Cross Institutional Study

Information for outgoing University of Adelaide Students

Students in Humanities and Social Sciences programs are permitted to undertake studies at another university (up to certain limits) in courses that are not available at the University of Adelaide, and have such study count towards their degree.

From 2005, students in Humanities and Social Sciences programs are permitted to enrol in cross institutional study in any academic discipline up to the following limits:

12 units at level 1*

12 units at level 2*

* For students who study cross institutionally up to the maximum limits, all remaining level 1 and 2 courses must be completed within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

Courses completed at other institutions cannot be included in the major sequence.

To undertake cross institutional study, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Office must be provided with a copy of the course details and unit value of the course(s) from the other university. If the application is approved it will serve as the authority to enrol at the other institution. The approval is subject to the permission of the other institution and students will need to enrol according to its instructions and deadlines.

On successful completion of the course(s), the Faculty Office must be provided with the notification of results so that credit may be awarded. Your University of Adelaide transcript will not record the details of the courses undertaken or the result achieved. It will simply indicate that unspecified credit has been awarded.

Cross institutional students incur student services fees and HECS/tuition fees at the other University for the courses in which they enrol.

Program rules relating to cross institutional study can be viewed in the University of Adelaide Calendar.

Incoming Cross Institutional Students

Students enrolled in a degree at a University other than the University of Adelaide are permitted to enrol in most courses within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

This permission is subject to:

  • the student satisfying the prerequisites/restrictions of the course
  • the prior approval of the student's home university. This may take the form of a letter of permission, or a signature on the University of Adelaide cross institutional enrolment form.
  • The completed cross institutional application/enrolment form must be lodged at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Office before the start of semester. Application forms are available from the /enrol web site. Once enrolled cross institutionally, students have the same access to University resources as regular students.

Cross institutional students who wish to withdraw from a course at the University of Adelaide must contact the Faculty Office immediately to obtain a withdrawal form.

Incoming cross institutional students incur student services fees and HECS/tuition fees at the University of Adelaide for the courses in which they are enrolled on the census date.

On successful completion of the University of Adelaide course(s), it is the student's responsibility to provide their home institution with their results.

A full list of undergraduate courses offered in 2007 through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is available at Courses. To find out detailed information on courses, please use the University Course Planner

This form is for students who would like to study an University of Adelaide course and credit it towards their home university program.  Students will also need to complete the Request for Commonwealth Support form and lodge it with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Non Award study

For complete information on Non Award study, visit the university's Non Award Enrolment site.

What is Non-Award Study?

When you undertake non-award study you attend lectures and tutorials, and are assessed and examined with students who are completing our undergraduate degrees but you do not study towards a specific program such as a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Sciences. You will receive an official academic transcript from the University of Adelaide that will record the course you studied and the grade that you received.

Why Study Non-Award?

Non-award study is a great way to ‘test the water’ regarding university study.

You do not have to apply through SATAC or take a Special Entry Test for admission, and do not require any formal schooling qualifications as you do to gain a place in an undergraduate degree. Most courses offered by the Faculty, including languages, are available to non-award students.

If you complete four courses as a non-award student, you may apply for admission to an undergraduate program, through SATAC, as a Tertiary Transfer student without sitting the Special Entry Test. If you complete less than four courses it is still a worthwhile exercise to do non-award courses as your chances of selection as a Special Entry student are enhanced. If you are offered a place in an undergraduate program the non-award courses completed can count towards your degree (up to a maximum of 22 units).

You do not have to intend to complete a program to undertake non-award study. You may undertake courses according to your interests without ever applying for a place in a program.

If you have completed previous tertiary study you can choose to undertake non-award studies in any area of the Humanities and Social Sciences for personal or professional development. If you already have a Bachelor Degree you may undertake non-award studies to satisfy the requirements for entry into Honours or another postgraduate qualification.

How do I enrol in Non Award Study?

Once you have chosen what course you would like to study Non Award from the University Course Planner , simply visit the faculty office to pick up a Non Award Enrolment Form, or download the relevant forms through the University Non Award Enrolment site.
