The University of Adelaide Australia

Honours

Graduates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences are encouraged to further their studies by undertaking an Honours year (one year of full-time study).  It includes advanced coursework and a research component where you will produce an extended piece of work (thesis) on a chosen topic in consultation with an academic supervisor. The Honours year is considered to be a year of full-time study and regular attendance at classes is required. It is possible to do Honours over two years on account of special personal or medical circumstances.

The prerequisite for Honours study is at least credit standard in a specified major - this may vary between disciplines. Applications are called for by Departments/Disciplines in October and November each year. Applications should be to the relevant Discipline Offices. There is no need to apply through SATAC for the Honours year. Further details on Honours are available from Schools and Disciplines in the Faculty.

Honours is the normal prerequisite for entry to a Higher Degree by Research at the Masters and Doctor of Philosophy level, and is also preferred by many employers.
