Study Skills Support
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers Study Skills assistance in a variety of ways. Our tutors can proofread essays, aid with research techniques and provide advice on course selection, careers and general study skills.
The HUMSS study skills clinics are on each Wednesday, from noon to 5pm. If you’re struggling with an essay, want some tips about study habits, or feel like you’re at risk of dropping out, then see Mateo or Stephanie in Napier G60! The clinics are set in an informal, casual environment designed to help you with your study in a flexible and adaptive way.
If you can’t make it at this time but would still like assistance please email us or phone Steph on 8313 0303.
Writing your first research Essay - by popular demand notes from the presentation by Ben Revi in Orientation Week.
| Week | Title | Material Covered |
|---|---|---|
| ONE | Critical Thinking in the Humanities and Social Sciences | We will look at what this concept is and why it is important in our Faculty (you will find you already think "critically" all the time). |
| TWO | Frequently used terms, styles of writing and points of grammar | We will cover the basics (that actually trip most of us up!); terms you will hear frequently; and common grammar "bloopers". |
THREE | The Question and the Answer | By now you will probably have your first essay questions. Please bring one along if you do. We will use this as a basis to consider what an esay question asks of you and how you can plan your response. |
| FOUR | Backing up your Argument | We will look at sources you have accessed in your research and apply our freshly-honed critical skills to them. |
| FIVE | Referencing and Editing | A trouble-shooting session designed to help you maximise the impact of your essays and ensure you have referenced them correctly. We will discuss why the giving of credit to other sources is important too. |
| SIX | Recap | We will go over what has been covered and what fresh questions have arisen from this - one of the maddening and marvellous things about life in the Humanities and Social Sciences: the questioning never stops! |
